Lawrence Silverman received his BA (Chem) from Washington and Jefferson College in 1968 and his PhD (Biochem) from Ohio State University in 1975. Following a NIH postdoctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry, and three years at the University of Southern California, he relocated to the University of North Carolina School of Medicine where he was Professor of Pathology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics and Director of the Division of Molecular Pathology and director of the Immunochemistry/Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, where he was also director of the postdoctoral training programs in clinical chemistry and molecular genetics. In 2002, he took a similar position at the University of Virginia, where he is Professor of Pathology and Public Health Genomics, and director of the Molecular Diagnostics, Clinical Genomics and Immunology Laboratories. He has organized and co-chaired the 1st, 2nd and 3rd national symposia on “Genetics, Ethics, and the Law”. He served on several editorial boards, including Clinical Chemistry (Reviews Editor) Clinca Chimca Acta, and the American Journal of Clinical Pathology. He has served as Chair of the Molecular and Clinical Genetics Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee of the FDA and Chair, Genetics Work Group, Clinical Laboratory Advisory Committee of the CDC. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.
